Tips For Installing A Pet Door

So you’ve decided you’re handy with a saw and a drill and install your own pet door. With these three easy steps and, of course, the right pet door, your best friend will be letting themselves in and out of the house in no time.

Three Steps For Selecting & Installing A Pet Door

Step One

Work out which size door best fits your pet. The door should be large enough to accommodate the largest pet that will use it. Measure the distance from the animal’s shoulders to the bottom of the rib cage, then add a little, for the minimum aperture.

Step Two

Check the size of the door with your pet and position the door hole. Use the paper template that is supplied with the pet door (or if there is no template, use its measurements) to cut a hole in a piece of corrugated cardboard that is exactly the same as the pet door.

To position the height, door manufacturers recommend the bottom of the door flap be level with the pet’s stomach when standing, so cut the hole in the cardboard at this height. Encourage your pet to step through the cardboard hole. If your pet fits easily through this hole, this size will work well. If it seems too tight, exchange the door for the next size up.

Step Three

Install the pet door. Cut the appropriate size hole in your door at the right height and insert the pet door following the supplied instructions. Make sure it is secured and finished well, with no rough edges that could catch your pet.

After the door is in place, give your pet some time to get used to it. Your pet should be watched closely to make sure it is able to both enter and exit the house unassisted before being left alone.
